The Rainbow Bridge

The Poem:

Rat Angel

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge, there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, water, and warm spring weather. The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play untill the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up. The nose twitches! The eyes are staring! This one suddenly runs from the group.

You have been seen, and, when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never to be separated.

Lizzie was the first rat I have ever had, and for her first birthday, Grace was adopted to be her companion. They were inseperable. Grace passed on very soon after cancer took Lizzie away from me. I believe she died of a broken heart.

Yesterday I lost my beloved Pink. She was our dear black-hooded rex that we got from a friend of mine. At 17 months she started showing signs of myco which I began treating right away. She gave up her fight 5 months later. She will live on in our hearts forever! She is a symbol of loyal devotion and courage. Her absence has created a great void in our lives. We find comfort in our lasting memories of her.
