Think caring for a pair of rats will be easy? Think again!

WE DIDN'T DO IT! (Notice the chewed wall paper in the background!)

Rats are relatively simple and inexpensive pets to care for, which is what attracts many potential rat owners. But be aware you are still making a two to three year commitment to provide the best possible care for another living thing…a responsibility that is not to be taken lightly!

What to expect from your rats---

Rats can be messy. They throw bedding and food all around. I have to vacuum/sweep around the rat cage daily.

Rats like to chew. Everything I own has teeth marks on it. The wall paper is being pulled/chewed off the wall, my sheets have holes through them, even the rubber soles on my shoes have chunks ripped out. And this is with constant supervision during free-range time!

Rats like to scent mark their territory. ‘Nuff said!

Rats can be thieves. They like to stash whatever they can. If any of your belongings are missing- check the rat cage.

Rats need daily socialization. Both with other rats and with people. Rats are extremely intelligent and social. Imagine being locked in a cage 24/7 by yourself…doesn’t sound fun does it. Rats kept in this manner can develop behavioral problems.

Most rat cages will need daily spot cleaning. I do a small cleaning every day and a major cleaning once a week. It takes me 45 minutes to do a major cleaning.

RATS NEED VET CARE!!! Sometime within your rats 2-3 year life span they WILL likely need to see a vet. Be prepared for this by locating a good vet BEFORE your rats get sick and by setting aside emergency funds.

If you think rats may be the pet for you- research, research, RESEARCH before you buy!
